The Pacific Blue Tang is also referred to as the Palette Surgeonfish, Hepatus Tang, Blue Surgeonfish, and Regal Tang. It is a highly prized, beautiful and long-lived Tang. Like most tangs and surgeons, it is easy to recognize because of the oval body shape and bold markings. It has a deep blue color with a "painter's palette" marking on the body.
Pacific Blue Tang requires a 100 gallon or larger aquarium with a number of hiding places and plenty of room to swim. It is tolerant of other tangs, but can occasionally be aggressive towards other Blue Tangs. If housing in groups, introduce all at once into a larger aquarium. It is more susceptible to lateral line disease, fin erosion, ich and other skin parasites than many other fish.
Because it feeds on algae, the Blue Tang will help to control the algae in your aquarium. It will also consume other vegetarian items
Minimum Tank Size: 100 gallons

Surferdude141, the information is good, except that it seems like I have read it on another site (drsfostersmith.com perhaps....) would be wise to paraphrase information or put the information in your own words, for legal reasons. |

I would think a 125 would be probabally well suited for larger tangs myself personally.. Hippo tang can get well over a foot in size.. |

Surferdude,
Please take any info you get from liveaquaria, drsfostersmith, and etropicals with a grain of sand. As mentioned in another post, they are notorious for giving out horrible information. I'm not saying that some of their info isn't valid, just don't base all of your theories on them. Try getting info from somebody that isn't trying to sell you livestock. |

How fast do hippo tangs grow? My lfs has a baby one. about an inch and a half.
I am going to buy it and put it my tank with some osilaris as a grow out for a larger (much larger) reef aquarium when it is cycled. The tank it will be going into is a 26G.
I kinda figured it would be ok for a while. At least a couple of months. |

Please do not keep any tangs, no matter how small, in such a small aquarium. Just because they are small dosen't mean they don't need swimming room.
They grow at a fast rate and it would just be stressfull on the fish to be taking him out when he has grown to much.

Hmmmm
The new tank is 8ft long 2ft deep and 2ft wide. I don't have a calculator handy to work out the volume in gallons for you guys. I think it is 230G. Thought that would be big enough.
I have lr and ls so the cycle time would be sped up. Just that it is hard to find hippo tangs in my area. Kinda thought that I would get it now while it was small.

I didn't know you had such a large tank to transfer it over to.
How long do you plan on keeping it in the 26 gallon? Surely a month or so is no problem.
The only problem is that Tangs in general should be added towards the end of the stocking list, otherwise they will claim large amounts of territory and harrass any new inhabitants.
I would personally wait untill the big tank has been set-up for awhile with othe inhabitants, and then add any tangs last.

I just figured out the volume would be about 350G.
I don't think it would be in the 26G for very long. I will see what happens.
I will try to make the tang the last thing I add. I can always ask my lfs to babysit for a while. They have a very big display tank.
