tangs are a wonderful fish. these are big and beautiful. my favorite is the yellow tang. it grows up to seven inches. the minimum tank size is 50 gallons. if you are even considering a tang please ask someone like me first. i can give you all the bio. plz have at least a 50 gallon tank for the smaller tangs. a regal tang like the one on finding nemo needs at least 100 gallons. tangs are herbivores by the way.

I have a yellow tang and just love it.. very active fish and cool personality.. and as already stated.. they are herbivore and you should consider this seriously when it comes to keeping one.. they need a healthy diet to thrive.. and surferdude.. I am happy to find someone else that agrees you can successfully keep a Yellow Tang in a 50 gallon.. but ONLY one.. and ONLY a few certain tang species.. Naso's, Hippo's, Powder Blues and so on are NOT a Tang to be putting in a small tank as a 50 gallon.. and these tangs require atleast 100 gallons if not bigger.. surferdude.. if you are willing maybe we can let ya post for awhile and if we are impressed we could set you up as a moderator? let us know what ya think.

the yellow tang or Zebrasoma flavescens is a wonderful fish.here are the details about it.
scientific nameZebrasoma flavescens
common name yellow tang or yellow hawaiian tang

Minimum Tank Size: 50 gallons
Care Level: Easy
Tank Conditions: 72-78°F; sg 1.020-1.025; pH 8.1-8.4; dKH 8-12
Temperament: Semi-aggressive
Max. Size In Aquarium: Up to 8"
Reef Compatible: Yes
Diet: Herbivore
Compatibility: View Chart
Origin: Hawaii
Family: Acanthuridae

The Yellow Hawaiian Tang, also known as the Yellow Sailfin Tang, or Yellow Surgeonfish, has an oval bright yellow body. It is widespread throughout Hawaii to Indonesia and the Great Barrier Reef.

A 50 gallon or larger aquarium is necessary to provide plenty of swimming room. It is aggressive towards its own species, or Tangs in general, and it is best to keep only one per tank. If more than one tang is to be kept, introduce simultaneously.

In its natural habitat, the Yellow Hawaiian Tang grazes on algae and small invertebrates. In the tank, it needs a varied diet high in beta-carotene and vitamin C, and low in protein matter. To maintain its bright coloration, however, it must keep to a strict herbivore diet to prevent fading. Therefore, the diet of the Yellow Hawaiian Tang should consist of dried and frozen herbivore food that contains marine algae, and vegetarian items such as Spirulina, zucchini, broccoli, leaf lettuce, and dried seaweed.

This is a very common, extremely popular, and hardy addition to any fish-only reef aquarium system.

50 gallons? That's pretty bad information to give out. I would suggest learning more about the fish before lending advice out.

Sounds like the information is taken off of LiveAquaria.com ... They have been known for giving bad advice out in their "Quick Facts" information.

Well.. I am guilty of believing a Yellow Tang can thrive in a 55 gallon tank.. as I do have one in a tank that size.. and it does appear to be healthy and doing just fine.. its only around 3.5" at the time too.. so that maybe has a big part in it aswell.. but I do strongly believe you shouldnt put LARGE tangs in a tank no smaller then 100 gallon..

I had read man places about these yellow tail BLUE tangs.(nemo movie). I am setting up a 90 gallon fowlr tank and am using a list of fish (at least pretty close ),from a book buyMichael paletta (THE NEW MARINE AQUARIUM). iN THESE BOOK they list 1 to 2 yellowtail blue tangs in a 55-75 gallon setup along with serval other fish. Now my question.I planned on 2 of these along with 2-3 banggai cardinal 5-7 blue green chromis, 1 coral beauty angle fish,2 flamefish,1longnose hawkfish, and 3-4 clownfish.of course I would add both tangs at same time and all fish will be small when purchased. Any comments?

Well there are as many different oppions as there are people in the world on the care of Tangs in general. IMO these fish spend ALOT of time in very small tanks in LFS's accross the country and if a home aquarist truely will care for the fish it will stand a much better chance of survival in their care . Suggested tank size is exactally that...a suggestion. I've seen 150gal tanks with less free swimming room for a Tang that a 55gal. Personally I would not put more than 1 Tang in anything less than a 6ft. long tank. Remember the more open area the better for these fish!!

Just my .02!!

ScottS75,

To The Reefers Inn!

The Blue Tang (Paracanthurus hepatus) can grow up to 1 foot. I strongly advise that you do not add one to a 90 gallon reef. You may get away with 1 however when it grows you will need to find a home for it.

If you add more then one they will quarrel and harrass eachother unless given a large aquarium of around 200 gallons. They need a lot of swimming room and like to dart through the rockwork.

Also, do take into account that this fish can be challenging to keep because it is very prone to contracting ich and other parasites as well as lateral line and fin erosion.

I strongly suggest you find something more suitable for your aquarium. Yellow Tangs are much more suited for a 90 gallon, IMO. They only reach up to roughly 7 inches. Only one should be kept unless added at the same time into a large 150+ gallon aquarium.

Also, I strongly suggest you purchase a knowledgable book on marine fish. Marine Fishes by Scott W. Michael is an excellent book and should be on every aquarists shelf.

How big is your aquarium? I'm hoping it's more then 55-75 gallons looking at your stocking list.

Hope this helps! Also, enjoy the forums and don't forget to check out the referral contest. You can find a link for information in my signature.

Rock Anemone Very Happy
